EBM Junior Council 2015 Launches Feeding Program
Lando’s wrath was no match to Paolo’s grit. When Typhoon Lando hovered over Luzon and threatened Metro Manila with strong winds and destructive floodwaters last October 18, 2015, Paolo Vera, the current EBM Junior Council Chair, was undeterred. Together with two equally resolute members, Monty Ngan, a high school senior at Xavier School and Rica Garin, a 13th Grade student from British School Manila, they braved the stormy weather and launched EBM’s Feeding Program at the Jose Fabella Memorial School* in Mandaluyong City.
During the short program, Paolo and Monty delivered inspirational messages. Paolo shared the news that the feeding will become a regular activity starting in December 2015 and will continue on every Saturday in 2016. For her part, Rica enlivened the mood of the crowd with her rendition of Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning,” Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” and Yeng Constantino’s “Hawak Kamay” (Hand-in-Hand) which prompted the children to gamely sing along with her.
Later on, Paolo, Monty & Rica distributed food packs to around 180 appreciative and well-behaved pupils. Then ice-cream carts with 4 yummy flavors were wheeled in to the delight of the kids. The smile on the kids’ faces remained as they took home colored shirts. They also received medicines from the Philippine Department of Health.
* The Jose Fabella Memorial School, formally established on December 3, 1925 by the National Government by virtue of Republic Act No. 815, is an integrated special school that caters to pupils/students with Behavioral Problems. Its total student body number over 2,000 children.
In September 2015, Paolo embarked on a charity mission to Angeles City, Pampanga to visit the Aeta community in the area – specifically the Sapang Bato Elementary School in Sitio Target, Angeles City, Pampanga. The entire EBM team was there to inaugurate the two deep wells built in the community through funds raised by the foundation. Following an earlier visit to the area, the artesian wells served as EBM’s direct response to the supplication of the local community for the Aetas to have access to clean water. On the day of the turnover, the school personnel gave a cheerful welcome to Paolo and the EBM group and the students did a musical performance to show their appreciation. After the ribbon cutting of the two wells, over 1000 pieces of clothing were distributed to the school children, kindly supplied by Monty Ngan, a senior from Xavier School. Overall, the day was a total success with sheer joy evident in the children’s’ eyes. Scuola de Scienza del Mija (SSM) or Science School of Mike and Jane, started as a small pre-school and was built with the help of School Directress, Jane H. Guyamin’s mother who works as an overseas domestic helper in Italy. SSM as another EBM - initiated project was provided with a new and improved library complete with a new sets of books that their students will enjoy. It was celebrated with a simple program titled “A Day of Thanksgiving” last August 16, 2014 at their school in Silang, Cavite. The project was a brainchild of Mr. Luis Miguel C. Vera and the rest of the Vera family.
The Empowering Brilliant Minds Foundation was officially launched last December 10, 2011 at the Marriot Hotel together with the “Kaagapay sa Silid” project in cooperation with Aklat, Gabay, Aruga Tungo sa Pag-Angat at Pag-Asa (AGAPP) & British School of Manila.
